Position Summary
Follow all company policies and procedures; protect company assets. Address guests’ service needs. Exchange information with other employees using electronic devices. Develop and maintain positive working relationships with others.
Chat with the rest of the IT crew to sort out whatever tech headache just popped up—software glitches, internet going haywire, printers throwing tantrums, that sort of thing. If something’s totally above your pay grade (like, the server catches fire or a laptop starts smoking), yeah, kick it over to the vendor or a real-deal technician. When programs throw up weird error messages, hunt down the problem, fix it, or just kill the program if it’s being dramatic.
Type in commands, mash some buttons, get the computers and their sidekicks (printers, scanners, you name it) up and running. Poke around and test stuff to figure out what’s broken. Keep tabs on all the tech gear—don’t let anything “walk away.” Babysit the network, mess with the servers, double-check the software is behaving. Make sure everyone can actually talk to each other online—network support is your jam.
Sometimes you’ve gotta spruce things up: swap hardware, push software updates, keep the website’s tech bits connected and humming. Back up the system so you’re not crying when something crashes. If someone can’t log in or forgot their password (again), help them out, set up accounts, or nuke them when someone leaves—privacy matters, right?
Set up new workstations—plug in all the cables, stack the laptops, get the printers hooked up. Sometimes you’ll be elbow-deep in tech manuals or stuck in endless user complaints, trying to figure out what’s busted or just helping people who are lost. Lock up the backups, keep the server room and phone closets secure. Teach people not to leave sensitive info lying around for hackers (or nosy coworkers).
Oh, and you’ll probably be hauling boxes or monitors now and then—nothing heavier than a small dog, don’t worry. If your boss asks for something else, well, just roll with it. That’s IT life.
